How to Make a Pokeball Planter for Easter

Easter is right around the corner! Easter baskets are a wonderful tradition celebrating the joy of spring and the return of all the growing things. Easter baskets are given to children on Easter, loaded with chocolate and spring-time treats. When I was growing up, we would make our Easter baskets up the night before to look like empty inviting nests. We left the baskets loaded with colorful “grass” in prominent places. That way when the Easter Bunny came by the house, he would be encouraged to leave chocolate and candy in the baskets! In the morning we would race over to see what the Easter Bunny left. All the candy was gently pulled out and set aside. Then, we would use our Easter baskets to gather up all the dyed Easter eggs that had been hidden around the house and the yard by the Easter Bunny. After the Easter egg hunt, we would ravenously devour the candy.

It has been a long time since I made an Easter basket. I was at a Walmart and saw this really fun Pokéball Easter basket. I try not to eat too much candy these days, so I didn’t want to fill it with chocolate bunnies or candy eggs. Those little Reese’s Pieces eggs are dangerously tasty! The Easter aisle was also full of all kinds of toys, fidgets, small plushies, activity books, and even trading cards to put in Easter baskets. I was quite surprised! Apparently, Easter baskets are now more like Christmas stockings, and often include toys as well as treats. It’s a neat change but was a bit of a culture shock for me.

I realized, I really wanted to make an Easter basket, but I wanted to do a fun alternative take on one. I’m a huge Pokémon fan and Oddish is one of my favorite Pokémon. The second I saw that Pokéball I thought, my goodness that would make the cutest planter. There were so many fun plastic Easter baskets that would lend themselves well to this craft project! I saw Minecraft, Bluey, Baby Yoda, and so many more on the shelves.

Planter pot secured, my next step was a Dollar Tree to get a bag of dirt. Planters should never break the bank. At the core all you need is a vessel, dirt, stones, and a plant. I wanted to use an actual potting mix since my little guy is a Rubber Plant (Peperomia Obtusifolia).

HOW TO MAKE A POKÉBALL PLANTER FOR EASTER

Step 1. Remove the Handle

I removed the handle from my Pokéball Easter basket. It is now a worthy vessel! The handle was secured by these little pressure fit hinges that popped right out.

Step 2. Drill the Drain Holes - USE ADULT SUPERVISION

I’m using my Pokéball planter for a living plant so it needs some drain holes to prevent waterlogging and root rot. I used a handheld drill. This step requires adult supervision. For anyone who does not have a drill, a great solution is to use plastic or silk flowers. Then the drain holes are not needed. I flipped the Pokéball upside down, and carefully drilled a random assortment of holes. They do not need to be perfectly spaced, they just need to let water through.

Step 3. Add Rocks

I placed a layer of rocks on the bottom of the pot. This is for a couple of reasons. The rocks help with drainage. Plants send their roots to the dirt where all the nutrients are, and are slow to attempt to root in rocks. Excess water can thus safely trickle into the rocks and prevent the dirt from getting too waterlogged. The other main reason is to weight the pot. This is especially important with pots that have a higher center of gravity like ball-shaped Pokéballs. The rocks prevent the pot from tipping over easily when fully loaded with dirt and plants.

Step 4. Add Dirt

Most plants need dirt to live. I added my Dollar Tree potting mix. I filled the Pokéball most of the way up with dirt, checking the level by placing my still potted Peperomia inside. I wanted to leave space from the rim to allow easy watering. I left about an inch of space from the top.

Step 4. Wet the Dirt

To prevent shock, I wet the dirt in my new planter as well as my little transplant guy. It’s important not to completely flood the dirt, but to just wet it until it is damp.

Step 5. Transplant the Plant

I gently squeezed the sides of the Peperomia’s tiny little seedling pot to loosen the dirt plug from the pot. He then slid out and I was able to set him into his new home.

Step 6. Tamp the Dirt

Using the back of my fingers I gently pressed down, tamping the dirt around the Peperomia. It’s important to be careful with this step, there are a lot of fragile little roots when transplanting young plants. They need to be secured and not crushed.

Step 7. Clean Up and Enjoy!

With that, my new planter was all done and my Peperomia was super happy to have a new home!

If you choose to make a planter out of an Easter basket, I would love to hear about it in the comments! I will definitely be hitting the stores after Easter to see if I can snag some cool baskets on sale to make summer planters and centerpieces.

Cutoff Crafts Watches A Minecraft Movie

Warning! Spoilers ahead for A Minecraft Movie!

Ahsoka and I went to the theater and we got a chance to watch A Minecraft Movie. I am absolutely an avid lover of Minecraft. I have played the game for a very, very, very long time. Back in my day, there was no such thing as the Nether. Yeah, it’s been a while. As well as building in Survival (…often in Hardcore), I also watch an absolute insane amount of streamers, including catching the regular MCCs (Minecraft Championships). I went into the movie theater cautiously optimistic but fully prepared to be burnt.

A Minecraft Movie perfectly and utterly matches the vibe of the video game. Period. It is clean, wholesome, fun that celebrates creativity, art, and friendship. For comparison, Five Nights at Freddy’s (2023) was objectively a decent movie but failed to capture the horror vibe of the video game series it was based on. A Minecraft Movie refuses to take itself too seriously and succeeds because of it. You can absolutely tell the writers and the actors leaned hard into all of the memes knowing that they were part of what the fans wanted. The opening hook sets the tone of the whole movie, “as a child I yearned for the mines.” Boom. That light-hearted twist on a meme (that highlights a rather serious modern controversy about child-labor) encapsulates the whole movie.

This is a movie that wears the guise of a fun adventure romp but at its core addresses several critical issues. I respect the writing crew for tackling these topics with care.

1. Economic Hardship

Times are tough, money is tight, and this movie does not shy away from showing it. Almost everyone depicted in this movie is struggling financially. The setting is a modern small town that is clearly reliant on a single potato chip factory to survive. The bombastic Garett Garrison the Garbage Man (Jason Momoa) runs a struggling video game store. His car is failing, he has no business, and his $900 gamble on a storage unit auction results in seeming defeat. Natalie (Emma Myers) and Henry (Sebastian Hansen) move to the town because rent is cheap and Natalie is able to land a job. Dawn (Danielle Brooks) is shown as a real estate agent with a whole slew of side hustles trying to stay afloat. This sets the stage for the appeal of video game escapism.

2. Creativity and Art is Important

Hands down this is the dripping, beating, heart of Minecraft as a game and A Minecraft Movie. My goodness, I don’t think I have ever seen a film restate in so very many different ways one singular core theme. Everything, absolutely everything, in this film is a celebration of creativity and it is a joy to watch.

The pressure to forsake creative endeavors and dreams because people demand it of you is strongly rebuked in this film. The primary villain is Malgosha (Rachel House) an evil piglin sorceress who acts as the ruler (and thinly veiled allegory to a boss) for all of the piglins. She bans all creative pursuits and demands piglins mine only gold. It is only when the ragtag group of adventurers learn to embrace their creativity that they have a chance at fighting Malgosha. Other sources of pressure addressed are from characters’ peers, parents, jobs, and self. The true finale is all the sweeter due to everyone coming together to build a better future and strengthen their community while they do it.

3. Parentification of Children

I did not at all expect A Minecraft Movie to address this, but here we are. Parentification is when a child ends up in the role of parent towards others. When the characters are first introduced I struggled with Natalie since she appears to be younger than I would expect. If I met the character on the street I might guess her to be around 17. Originally, I thought perhaps I was just misjudging her age. However, it becomes extremely apparent later that yes, Natalie is quite young to be responsible for Henry and the stress that places on her is significant. I deeply appreciate that this topic was not glossed over but actually gets addressed in the film.

Is the movie still fun even with these heavy issues woven in? Yes, absolutely. This is positively a silly movie that also addresses serious issues in a way that hopefully helps people. I would absolutely recommend A Minecraft Movie for anyone wanting an uplifting fun romp with a bunch of jokes.

Some theaters have struggled with fans being a bit too enthusiastic in enjoying the memes. Our local theater, the Hayden Cinema, has a wonderful solution. For anyone wanting to cheer, jeer, scream, clap and have more rambunctious fun the Hayden Cinema has scheduled special Chicken Jockey showings this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Those looking for a more sedate movie going experience are advised to watch at one of the regular showings.

If you are a fan of Minecraft, watch this movie. If you are looking for some silly fun, watch this movie. I will definitely be adding it to my personal collection the moment it hits dvd.

Bloom into Spring With a Craft Fair!

The robins have returned to welcome us into spring, once more! This Saturday, April 12th, the Rathdrum Craft and Farmers Market is hosting the Bloom into Spring Craft Fair at the Rathdrum Lions Club. The Bloom into Spring Craft Fair is the perfect opportunity for anyone looking to fill Easter baskets with some wonderful gifts. It’s a free to attend event and runs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Cutoff Crafts will be attending with all kinds of delightful springtime fun. We will have our iconic sticker tower loaded with a lovely selection of vinyl, water-resistant, stickers. There will stickers of all kinds, including; Christian, animals, inspirational, video games, anime, movies, and more!

Michelle has been creating beautiful new beaded earrings out of a mix of Tierra cast charms made in the United States, Swarovski crystals from Austria, Czech glass beads from the Czech Republic, stone beads, and sterling silver seed beads. Each pair is mounted on hypoallergenic sterling silver hooks that are made in the United States. My favorite pair are these bunnies resting on stone tree agate beads.

Ahsoka’s crocheted amigurumi animals are a riot of color! There will be super soft bees, cute chickens, and an army of turtles. Fun fact: the plural noun for a group of turtles is a bale. That means someone could see a bale of hay and a bale of turtles if they were driving past farms along a coast!

A few things at the booth will be more than meets the eye. We will have official licensed Transformers plushies for Optimus Prime and Megatron! They will be hiding amongst plushies inspired by Kuromi (from Hello Kitty), Agumon (from Digimon), Huggy Wuggy (from Poppy Playtime), and other stuffed friends.

To celebrate Cutoff Crafts’ recent Pokémon events, we have made mystery loot bags filled with Pokémon themed swag, trading cards, and card sleeves. Those card sleeves sure come in handy if you pull a holo legendary!

Here’s a fun word search printable pdf all about Rathdrum’s Bloom into Spring Craft Fair! It’s full of words from this blog. The answer key is on page 2, no peeking!

We hope to see everybody there on Saturday, it should be a hoot!
